What is a Keyword?

A keyword is a word that you type into a search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing, or even your favorite social network like Facebook or Twitter. Everyday people are using these search engines to enter their appropriate keywords.

Let us now gain a better understanding of what a keyword is. It is time to get started to find out the niche you would like to promote and how to find the perfect keywords that you need to get started.

Tools Required to perform keyword research

In order to perform effective keyword research you need to make use of an effective keyword research tool. There are many different keyword tools out in the market. Some of these include – Keyword Planner, Market Samurai, Jaaxy etc. Choosing the right one that will prove to be an effective should be your main goal. I personally use Jaaxy for all my research because it is one of the most accurate tools that is available on the market today.

Understanding how keyword research works:

When you begin your journey with Keyword Research, I would always recommend to start out broad and then narrow it down.

Four Major Categories of Keywords:

When doing Keyword Research, you will come across four major categories of keywords. They are:

1. Broad – These keywords are words that show up wherever it is seen in the webpage. For example: Red Shoe- can also be seen in results showing the word red and the results showing the word shoe. These words do not give you targeted visitors. This should not be used for PPC.

2. Exact – This is the keyword that you type exactly in Google. The keyword you enter is inside double quotes. For example, when you type “red shoes”, you will get totally different results from red shoes.

3. Phrase – This is the keyword that you type on Google in square brackets []. Where ever there is a phrase with that keyword, then Google will display those results to you.

4. Negative – These are words that you don’t want your searches to appear. Negative keywords are entered with a ‘-‘ preceding the keyword. This will make sure that your keywords will appear in more accurate search results.

Major Reasons why I do this:

  • You will find other important keywords that you didn’t know before.
  • You will be able to find out a broader spectrum of keywords.
  • It is much easier to think of broad keywords.

The second most important thing that you need to focus on is your competition. Depending on how many other pages are ranked in Google under your exact keyword phase, you need to evaluate your competition. This number should be anything below 400. It is always best to keep it below 300 if you can.

As a matter of fact, the #1 thing that you look for when trying to find keywords to write an article on. If the competition is too high, itz not a good idea to waste your time to get your keyword ranked.

The next important thing is- how many searches does a keyword get a month? There is a lot of debate over this topic here recently. You always want to try and find a keyword that gets close to 50 searches a month. If you find a great keyword but it’s only getting like 10 searches or less a month does this mean you should avoid using it?

Absolutely not this is only an estimate of how many times it gets searched. It could end up getting way more searches than that but there is not enough data to be able to narrow it down.

Think of it like this let’s say you find a awesome keyword with low competition but only 10 searches a month. If you can find 10 of these great keywords you will be getting 100 searches a month for those keywords.

Another thing to keep in mind is the keyword should always make sense. If it doesn’t make sense then

  • You will have a pretty hard time to develop content around it.
  • Readers will be less interested in reading such articles.
  • Google doesn’t like to see words that don’t make sense and you will end up losing rankings. They look at this as a poor user experience.

Now, lets take a look at these keywords and turning them into an article that will get ranked in the search engines:

Now that we have our keywords, it is time to write about them. This could be a post or page on your website.

  • You could write an article on a article directory.
  • You could even use them in a description for a video you could make and upload it on you tube.
  • You can get traffic from multiple sources from the same keyword.

By keeping these things in mind, this will help you become an expert at doing keyword research. Jaaxy simplifies the whole keyword research process and makes it super easy to find amazing keywords that have low competition and are easy to get ranked for.
